Puma Limited "Tommie Smith Mexico City Olympics" Gold Clyde
With Original Box (damaged), Puma "Clever Little Box" (Bag) & Gold Laces!
It was during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City
where 2 U.S. athletes stood shoeless, in black socks, as they collected their medals for the 200 meter race - Gold for Tommie Smith
and Bronze for John Carlos. As the United States national anthem played, both raised a black gloved fist and bowed their heads, to signify the racial & social inequalities within the U.S. The Silver medalist, Peter Norman of Australia, who was white, showed his support to their cause by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. The sensation and the controversy caused the 2 U.S. athletes to be striped of their medals and expelled from the games. However, it also imprinted deeply into Americas social conscience at the time.
40 years later, to honor those courageous athletes and their pivotal point in the struggle for equality on and off the track, Puma
launched the Tommie Smith Gold Clyde. Made entirely in metallic gold leather and embossed all over with the 1968 Mexico City Olympic gold medal pattern, the Puma Tommie Smith Gold Clyde highlights the athlete's achievements on the track that day. Smith's time of 19.83 seconds in the 200 meter race could be seen on the tongue labels, along with reference of the 1968 Olympic game in Mexico City on the interior liner.
